Orthodontic Treatments for Children & Adults
Orthodontic treatment is most commonly carried out on children and adolescents, but is becoming increasingly popular with adults. Care for children is considered essential for growth and development, and also prevention of tooth decay and gum disease. With adults, orthodontic treatment is more often used as a ‘remedy’ for an existing problem.
Interceptive orthodontic treatments are often prescribed for children, in order to lessen existing problems while ensuring future treatments are quicker and more effective. In tackling a 'bite' or 'crowding' issue early it can eliminate the likelihood of extensive problems occurring later. Examples of interceptive treatments are functional appliances and the removal of a tooth to prevent crowding.

Crowding is the most common orthodontic problem. It is usually caused by teeth being too large for the area of jaw, and needs to be rectified as early as possible to avoid structural damage to the jaw and mouth, and to avert the risk of longer-term issues. Braces are the tool to fix these problems.

Worn away teeth are often caused by the individual chewing in their sleep. Bruxism, as it is often known, results in the teeth becoming shorter and less functional, as well as leading to other symptoms such as a painful jaw. Orthodontic treatment can be used to realign teeth that have been ‘moved’ through grinding, and further repair work such as dental implants and crowns can also be undertaken.
Protrusive teeth, overbites and cross bites can all be corrected with orthodontic treatment. This straightening of the teeth is usually achieved using a fixed appliance (a 'brace' or 'train tracks'). With private treatments ceramic, ‘tooth coloured’ braces are available alongside the traditional metal tracks. They work by gradually and carefully moving the teeth into their new position, using brackets that are attached to the teeth and held in place with wire and elastic. As the wires adjust so does the pressure applied to the teeth, resulting in the necessary movements.

Fixed Appliances
These braces are worn full-time for the duration of the treatment. There are several types:
Conventional Braces
Braces (train tracks) are the most common appliance used in orthodontics. Fixed braces are used to close gaps between teeth and treat crowding, malaligned teeth and cross-bites, and often over and under bites. They can be labial, which are attached to the front of the teeth, or lingual, which are bonded to the back of the teeth.
Damon Braces
Damon’s labial braces are self-ligating, which means that the brace does not require elastic or metal ties attached to the brackets. Damon’s braces utilise low friction mechanics, which means faster treatment and greater comfort.
3M Clarity Ceramic Braces
The Clarity 3M range of ceramic braces are as strong and as effective as their metal counterparts. Ensuring a translucent, barely visible appearance, their comfortable design means they are a popular choice for patients
Incognito Invisible Braces
We work with Incognito to provide fully customised lingual invisible braces, incorporating gold brackets made to individual specifications. This ‘perfect fit’ ensures the ultimate in comfort and durability. But most importantly the braces are nearly undetectable when in use, quite simply no-one needs to know that you are wearing braces.
As their name suggests, these are not worn all of the time
Aligners
Aligners are similar in the way they work to braces, but without the metal brackets and wires. They are not detectable to the naked eye, and are easily removed when eating or cleaning the teeth. We offer the Invisalign treatment, which consists of a series of individually manufactured aligners supplied in sequence to the individual’s exact specifications.
Retainers
Removable retainers are used to prevent problematic teeth reverting back to their original position, and thus undoing the hard work of orthodontic care. They are also utilised to counteract thumb sucking and to correct deep bites.
Fixed and removable space maintainers are used with children who have lost a tooth and need the space to be maintained until the ‘adult’ tooth emerges, or where the creation of space is required in a crowded mouth.
Functional Appliances
Used in a growing patient, these braces allow us to use your natural growth to correct common problems such as protrusive teeth and jaw retrusion.
